Syrlybek Bekbotayev (born in Shymkent, Kazakhstan in 1987, lives and works in Almaty) Bekbotayev belongs to the new generation of photographers and video artists on the contemporary scene of Central Asia. His work, The Music of the Steppe (produced by Apollonia for the exhibition) gives without nostalgia, a poetic vision of traditional gestures and objects related to childhood. Especially centered around the traditional birthplace - the bekik - the video shows this object in a context that is not one of the family home. Cribs, worn at arm by a procession of women, traverse the steppe in slow motion giving a certain hieratic to these characters.
